Defining Antisemitism

A single definition of antisemitism, as with that of any complicated and multi-layered phenomenon, will always be advisory at best.

How does the AEI define antisemitism?

The AEI does not endorse any single definition of antisemitism. We look to the various formal definitions offered by scholars and advocacy organizations as tools. Antisemitism is best understood by analyzing its context rather than by assessing its relationship to a formalized definition. We recommend that university stakeholders learn about the various ways that the term has been defined, rather than formally adopting any single definition.

What are the most common definitions of antisemitism?

The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition, the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism (JDA), and the Nexus Document are three well-known tools that were developed in recent years to help institutions and community members better understand antisemitism.

What other resources do you recommend?

For faculty and university administrators, we encourage reading this report from the Association for Jewish Studies, which includes recommendations around navigating official definitions of antisemitism at an institutional level, as well as guidelines for confronting antisemitism and protecting academic freedom.
